Passion Fruit Margaritas

passion fruit margarita

These Passion Fruit Margaritas are made by shaking together passion fruit puree, tequila, Grand Marnier, and freshly squeezed lime juice for a fresh, bright, and slightly sour cocktail that’s perfect for sipping poolside!

If You Love Passion Fruit Cocktails, This Is Going to Be Your New Favorite!

I love making fun, fruity margaritas throughout the summer. The classic combination of lime, tequila, and orange liqueur is refreshing and all, but why stop there when you could add seasonal ingredients like fresh watermelon, strawberry, mango, or passion fruit?

This passion fruit margarita is my current favorite cocktail. To keep it easy-breezy, I used a quality passion fruit puree from Amazon rather than juicing my own fresh passion fruits (that takes time, plus they’re so expensive where I live!).

You can choose to salt the rim or not, but personally I always do! If I’m not in the mood for plain salt, I’ll use Tajin, which is a seasoning blend made with lime, chili, and salt. Garnish your glass with a dried lime slice, and you’re ready to hit the pool!

Ingredient Notes

You can find the full list of ingredients, quantities, and method in the recipe card at the end of the page.

  • Tequila. I’m using a tequila blanco here for a clean flavor, but you can sub in reposado if that’s what you like. My favorite brands are Lalo and Mijenta.
  • Grand Marnier. Margaritas always call for an orange liqueur or “triple sec.” I find that Grand Marnier gives the best flavor, but you can also use Cointreau or a more budget-friendly generic triple sec.
  • Fresh lime juice. Fresh lime juice is a MUST. Please don’t buy those little green bottles shaped like limes. Buy bottled fresh lime juice (sold in the refrigerator section) or buy some limes and juice them yourself!
  • Passion fruit juice. If you have easy access to fresh passion fruits, don’t hesitate to use them here! They’re expensive to come by and so I use this passion fruit puree from Amazon.
  • Simple syrup. Passion fruit is very tart and the puree I use doesn’t have much sugar so a little simple syrup helps balance the margarita and keep it from being too sour.
  • Tajin. I love the contrast of a little spice here so I always rim my margarita glass with Tajin! Swap in salt, sugar, or a combo of the two if that suits your tastes better.

How to Make Passion Fruit Margaritas

  1. Rim your glass and fill with ice. I find it easiest to spread some of the salt or Tajin into a shallow layer on a dessert plate. Then, I dip the glass into a bowl of water before rubbing into the salt / Tajin to coat the rim evenly.
  2. Build the cocktail in a shaker. Use a jigger to measure the cocktail ingredients into a shaker, add a few ice cubes, screw on the lid, and shake to combine.
  3. Strain into the prepared glass. You can stop there, but I always garnish my passion fruit margs with a slice of dried lime. It looks so pretty!

To make the dried lime slices: Thinly slice two limes, then place on a rack set over a baking sheet. Bake at 225ºF for about 4 hours, or until the lime slices are dark in color and very dry. Cool to room temperature before using and store in an airtight container.

How to Make This a Pitcher Cocktail for a Crowd

As written, this recipe makes one perfect cocktail. If you’ll be serving margs to a crowd of 8 – 10 people, mix the margaritas in a big pitcher for easy pouring.

In a large pitcher combine:

  • 2 cups Tequila
  • 1 cup Grand Marnier (or Cointreau/Triple Sec)
  • 3/4 cup Freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 cup Passion Fruit Puree
  • 3/4 cup simple syrup

Jenny’s Tip: Never add ice to the pitcher! This dilutes the drink. Instead, stir the drink well and pour over ice in a rocks glass.

I don’t care for margaritas, but after these I find myself craving them! Great simple recipe for a crowd-pleaser. This is going to be one of the cocktails at that “End of Quarantine Summer BBQ!” Keep the recipes coming!
