Nutella-Stuffed French Toast
Nutella-Stuffed French Toast is an EASY yet elevated take on classic French toast that’s perfect for weekend breakfasts or holiday brunches! Gooey Nutella is sandwiched between two pieces of brioche, dipped in a custard batter, and lightly fried in butter. What could be better than that?
This is one of my favorite recipes to make when we’re having guests for brunch. It’s easy to prep in advance (instructions provided below!) and only takes a couple of minutes to throw together, yet it feels so decadent. Brioche French toast stuffed with Nutella is a chocolate-lover’s paradise!

Stuffing French Toast with Nutella Is Always a Good Idea
I absolutely LOVE Nutella, as evidenced by my Nutella lava cakes and Nutella linzers. There’s just something magical about the combination of rich chocolate and toasty hazelnuts! Taking your average French toast and layering in some Nutella really just takes it to the next level.
Nutella-stuffed French toast is pure heaven that will make you look like a culinary rockstar. Did I mention this recipe only takes minutes to prep? I have personally never been a sweet breakfast person, but this recipe actually makes me want to convert.
This is the perfect recipe for feeding a crowd because you can prep so much of it in advance! You can mix the custard up days in advance and then all that’s left is to sandwich brioche with Nutella and fry it up. You’re going to turn to this stuffed French toast recipe over and over again!

Tools Needed
Grab These 8 Ingredients
- Bread. Brioche is my favorite for making French toast (especially the brioche from Trader Joe’s!), but you can use any bread you have including gluten-free bread or even croissants.
- Nutella. Any chocolate hazelnut spread will do!
- Eggs. Eggs make the custard rich and delicious.
- Half and half. You could use milk, but half and half takes the batter to the next level.
- Grand Marnier. I love the hint of orange that Grand Marnier adds and it pairs so perfectly with the chocolate. You may omit if you don’t like cooking with alcohol.
- Sugar. Sugar is a must in the batter and caramelized beautifully on the outside of the bread.
- Vanilla bean paste. You can swap in vanilla extract, but the vanilla bean paste adds so much more flavor.
- Butter. Cooking french toast in butter is ALWAYS the play.

How to Make Nutella-Stuffed French Toast (with Tips!)
Jenny’s Tip: This recipe is so easy to make! My biggest recommendation is to always use a quality nonstick pan so that the French toast crisps up without burning or sticking.
- Let the bread get stale. This is the secret to great, non-soggy French toast. Slightly stale bread absorbs the custard without falling apart. Lay the bread out on a tray and let it sit at room temp overnight for best results.
- Spread the Nutella. Spread a generous layer of Nutella on half the bread slices and sandwich them with the other slices.
- Make the custard. Whisk together all the custard ingredients in a mixing bowl and then pour it into a shallow dish.
- Soak the bread. Dip the bread in the custard on both sides. It’s best to go right from the custard to the frying pan, so set up a little assembly line!
- Fry the French toast in butter. Melt a bit of butter in the skillet over medium heat and once it’s hot and foamy, add the soaked french toast. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown on both sides. Transfer to a plate and and repeat with the remaining French toast. Serve warm!

Make-Ahead Tips
- 2-3 days before brunch: Whisk together the custard and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. On the morning of, just transfer the batter to a shallow dish for dipping.
- 2 days before brunch: Set your brioche slices out so they get nice and stale. I lay mine on a baking sheet and let them sit out overnight.
- The night before brunch: Make all your Nutella sandwiches. Cover them and you can keep them at room temperature overnight. You can also macerate the strawberries and make the whipped cream and store both in separate airtight containers in the fridge.
- On the morning of: Dip your bread, fry it up, and serve! If you’re making a large batch, keep a baking sheet in the oven at 200ºF and store the cooked French toast there until you’re ready to serve. This way everyone gets hot and fresh French toast!

My Favorite Toppings
While I would normally slather French toast with salty butter and pure maple syrup, French toast that’s been stuffed with Nutella just does not have a maple syrup vibe in my opinion.
My favorite way to serve this French toast is by topping it with some lightly sweetened whipped cream and macerated strawberries. The strawberries pair so perfectly with the chocolate and gives a bit of a fresh balance so the rich chocolate. I also love to dust it with a bit of powdered sugar!
To macerate strawberries, just combine 1 1/2 cups diced strawberries with 2 tablespoons of sugar. Stir and let the strawberries sit until they get nice and juicy. Top the French toast with the strawberries and the released juices.

Stuffed French toast is the perfect springboard for all kinds of brunch creations. Try one or more of the following swaps to customize this easy recipe:
- Swap the brioche for another type of bread (pretty much anything will work, promise!)
